David R. Maas is a lifelong artist and educator based in Quincy, Illinois, whose career spans more than five decades. Born and raised in Quincy, David has dedicated his life to exploring and teaching the visual arts while producing a diverse body of creative work.

His artistic philosophy is captured in one of his favorite quotes from Vincent Van Gogh: “Normality is a paved road: It's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.” This outlook continues to guide his approach to both art and life.

A true multidisciplinary artist, David has worked in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, collage, and mixed media.

David is especially known for his caricature art, which he has created professionally since 1980, and for his bold figure drawings that often feature exaggerated perspective. His influences span pop art, surrealism, op art, impressionism, post-impressionism, regionalism, and Japanese Gyotaku printmaking, all of which add depth and variety to his creative practice.

Beyond his personal work, David has left a lasting mark as an art educator. He taught art at Payson Seymour Junior & Senior High School for more than 30 years, served as a fishing instructor with the Quincy Park District, and has been an adjunct professor of studio art at Quincy University since 2012. Over the course of 54 years, he has inspired countless students to discover and pursue their own artistic voices.

David’s artistic career has also included time as a freelance greeting card designer and writer for Recycled Paper Products in Chicago, IL, and as a co-author and publisher of several trivia books and calendars with his wife, Wendy A. Smith. Together, they created Quincy Trivia #1 and Quincy Trivia #2, celebrating the culture and community of their hometown.

As a co-founder and the sole remaining charter member of Art Gallery 310, David continues to be a vital presence in both Quincy and Hannibal’s art communities. His collected works have been exhibited across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, a testament to his wide-ranging impact and artistic versatility. Today, David Maas remains dedicated to creating, teaching, and sharing his passion for the arts, ensuring that his creative journey continues to inspire both local audiences and the wider art world.
