Kathy Hyer
Kathy Hyer is a dedicated multidisciplinary artist and lifelong resident of Quincy, Illinois, whose work captures the spirit of exploration and creative freedom. With a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s degree in Education from Southwest Baptist University, Kathy has spent her life immersed in the world of art and education.
For over three decades, Hyer inspired generations of young artists as an art teacher at Unity High School in Mendon, Illinois, and across the Quincy Public School system. She taught a wide range of age groups—from elementary students at Baldwin to middle and high school students at Quincy Junior High and Quincy Senior High
Kathy retired from teaching in 2010, but her commitment to arts education extended beyond the public school system. She also served as an adjunct instructor at Quincy University, Culver-Stockton College, and John Wood Community College.
Now fully devoted to her personal art practice, Kathy finds joy and inspiration in her home studio, where she experiments with a wide array of materials. Her work showcases a diverse range of media, but she has found a particular passion in collage and mixed media. Much of her recent work stems from playful and intuitive sessions using gelatin plate printing techniques. These monoprints often serve as the foundation for richly textured and layered collages. One of her signature styles includes bird-themed compositions that blend abstraction, watercolor, and recycled textures.
Kathy's approach is deeply exploratory—each piece is the result of curiosity, play, and artistic reflection. Her use of color, composition, and unconventional materials gives her work a unique, dynamic energy. Her artwork has been featured at Art Gallery 310 in Hannibal, Missouri, since 2010, and has been included in numerous regional art exhibitions. Her pieces also reside in several private collections.
