Kay Sutherland
Kay Sutherland is a contemporary watercolor and multidisciplinary artist based in Quincy, Illinois, whose creative journey began after an accomplished 30-year career in manufacturing management. Upon early retirement, Kay fully embraced her passion for visual art, devoting her time to studying and creating original watercolor paintings, pastel landscapes, mixed media works, and more.
Her artistic exploration was further supported by ten years working part-time with the Quincy Society of Fine Arts, where she gained valuable exposure to art education and community outreach. This experience also connected her with a vibrant creative community that continues to influence her artistic journey.
She is an active member of several regional arts organizations, including the Quincy Artists Guild, Great River Watercolor Society, Sangamon Watercolor Society, and the Saint Louis Watercolor Society. Being a sitting artist at our gallery, Kay has enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow artists and the ability to form connections with people locally and abroad.
A self-described perpetual student, Kay is a dedicated lifelong learner who has pursued art courses at Quincy University and Western Illinois University, focusing on watercolor, drawing, ceramics, oil painting, and printmaking. Over the past 25 years, she has honed her skills in various workshops with renowned national and international artists, including Charles Reid, Stephen Quiller, Ted Nuttall, Mark Mehaffey, Fealing Lin, Anne Abgott, Paul Jackson, Bev Jozwiak, Pat Dews, Ratindra Das, Carla O’Connor, and Alvaro Castagnet. Her artistic studies even led her to France, where she attended pastel workshops in Provence and Normandy, taught by David Garrison.
Her art has been recognized with several awards, including first place in watercolor at the Illinois State Fair’s professional division.
