Kathy Huse
Kathy Huse is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative journey began in St. Louis County, Missouri. A lifelong maker with an imaginative spirit, Kathy has always been drawn to crafting, building, and experimenting with new materials. From folding origami shapes as a child to painting murals on her bedroom walls with her parents’ blessing, she has pursued artistic expression since before grade school.
Today, she is best known at the gallery for her display of vibrant ceramic sculptures and distinctive fiber weaving creations, with each eclectic piece showcasing the playfulness, craftsmanship, and eccentricity that make her art distinctive. Her work invites viewers to pause, smile, and appreciate the joy of creativity expressed in unexpected ways.
Before devoting herself fully to her studio practice, Kathy spent nearly two decades sharing her passion for creativity with students. She began her teaching career in inner-city St. Louis at Mann Elementary School, where she taught kindergarten through fifth grade for 14 years. Later, she continued teaching art in Washington and Ralls County, adding up to 18 years of inspiring young artists. It was during her time in Ralls County that Kathy was first introduced to ceramics—quickly discovering a new love for sculpting clay. Her earliest ceramic works included flower sculptures for garden pots, sparking an ongoing exploration of form, texture, and whimsy.
Kathy’s creative path took another turn when she discovered weaving. She recalls being awakened one night with an overwhelming inspiration to weave rugs and textiles. By chance—or fate—she received a loom the very next day. From that point on, weaving became a vital part of her artistic expression, leading her to create everything from hats and gloves to rugs and handbags.
Kathy joined Art Gallery 310 in 2012, where her ceramic sculptures immediately impressed fellow artists and secured her place in the community. Her work is colorful, eclectic, and often delightfully quirky, reflecting her joy in asking, “What am I going to make today?” Whether shaping clay into unexpected forms or weaving fibers into bold designs, Kathy embraces spontaneity and fun in every creation.
