  • Facebook

Patsy Cornwell is an artist based in Quincy, Illinois, specializing in vibrant alcohol ink paintings, expressive watercolors, and soft yet dynamic oil pastel artworks. After retiring from a 33-year career as a beloved primary school teacher, Patsy embraced a new chapter—pursuing her lifelong passion for visual art. Now, when she begins a new piece, she finds herself completely immersed, and time seems to melt away.

Art has always been part of Patsy’s world. However, now that she is a practicing artist, she strives to learn, grow, and push her creative boundaries, always eager to see where her artistic journey will take her next. Each new piece reflects not only her evolving skills but also her deep passion for sharing beauty and meaning through art.

During her teaching years, she brought creativity into the classroom by designing weekly lessons around famous artists. On Fridays, her students would learn about a master—like Georgia O’Keeffe, Henri Matisse, or Vincent van Gogh—and create artwork inspired by their styles. Teaching young children to paint like the greats required Patsy to deeply study each artist’s unique techniques. That experience was incredibly gratifying for her as an art-loving teacher, but it also helped lay the foundation for her own creative voice.

Today, Patsy’s work focuses on both abstract and realistic art, with a strong emphasis on natural themes such as landscapes and wildlife. She often paints from her own photography, capturing places and moments that hold personal meaning. Alcohol inks, with their unpredictable flow and rich pigments, are her favorite medium. Their spontaneity allows her to experiment with color and composition, a unique piece emerging each time from the chaotic, playful process of the medium. She also enjoys the softness of watercolor paintings and the richness of oil pastels, which add variety and depth to her portfolio.

As a Midwest-based female artist, Patsy has found fulfillment in the process of making art, but her greatest joy comes from sharing it with others. Through each painting, she hopes to spark a sense of wonder and warmth in those who view her work, just as she felt while creating it. That spark inspired her daughter, Madeline, to also become an artist, and her son, Samuel, remains one of her biggest supporters.
