Michelle Huseman
Photographer Michelle Huseman grew up in the small town of Bluffs, Illinois, where her quiet and introverted nature found a powerful outlet through the lens of a camera. She recalls that photography became a communication tool, allowing her to express herself, connect with others, and see the world from unique perspectives. What began as a way to engage with people and experience new things soon evolved into a lifelong artistic journey, one that continues to inspire both Michelle and her audience.
Michelle’s passion for photography started in junior high, when she captured images of school sporting events and sold them to classmates. At the same time, she was drawn to nature photography, showcasing flowers, trees, and other similar subjects.
Her first professional role was with The Bluffs Times, a local newspaper, where she learned the fundamentals of photography, darkroom development, editing, and storytelling. This early experience gave her access to new places, people, and opportunities, shaping both her craft and her character.
Over the years, Michelle explored event photography—weddings, portraits, and family gatherings—before turning her attention more fully toward fine art photography. Inspired by her late friend Bill Krehmeier’s belief that “there’s beauty in everything,” she developed her artistic voice by focusing on unusual perspectives, reflections, and the hidden details of everyday life. Her work often captures natural scenes, wildlife, and geometric shapes, but always with an eye toward abstraction and discovery. She believes photography should spark curiosity, start conversations, and encourage deeper thought.
Michelle’s artistic achievements have been recognized by the Hannibal Arts Council, including winning the ART IN THE OPEN contest with her Gerber Daisy photo Vibrance, which was featured on a community billboard. Her work has also been exhibited in regional shows such as the Mary S. Oakley Art Show in Quincy, Illinois.
Today, Michelle continues to pursue photography alongside her role as owner of the Mark Twain Book & Gift Shop in Hannibal, MO, which is situated right next door to Art Gallery 310. Whether printed on canvas, glass, or traditional mediums, her photography invites viewers to pause, reflect, and see the beauty in both the ordinary and the extraordinary.
